Sardinia
La Sardegna, (Sardigna o Sardinnia in Sardo), è un'isola ed una regione autonoma a statuto speciale della Repubblica Italiana.
Il riconoscimento della specialità statutaria, sancito nella Costituzione del 1948, garantisce alle istituzioni regionali una larga autonomia
amministrativa e culturale. Infatti, unitamente alla Corsica, l'Isola è
depositaria di una millenaria cultura autoctona, con singolari peculiarità
etniche e linguistiche, che nel contesto storico e culturale italiano, è
prettamente considerata un'area a sè stante. Situata al centro del
Mediterraneo occidentale, l'accentuata insularità è stata il fattore
predominante che ha contribuito a differenziarla dalle altre Regioni d'Italia,
anche se, già dall'antichità, esistevano continui rapporti commerciali con il
continente, principalmente verso il Lazio e la Toscana.
In epoca moderna, molti viaggiatori e scrittori hanno esaltato nelle loro opere le bellezze incomparabili dell'Isola, immerse in un ambiente in gran parte incontaminato, che ospita un paesaggio botanico e faunistico con specie uniche al mondo, e nel quale si trovano poi le vestigia del misterioso periodo nuragico, di quello fenicio e punico, di quello romano. Lo scrittore inglese David Herbert Lawrence, nel suo pellegrinare all'interno delle Barbagie, scriveva meravigliato nel suo diario di viaggio: «..questa terra non assomiglia ad alcun altro luogo...».
Il nome Sardegna deriva da quello dei suoi antichi abitatori: i Sardi. Ben conosciuta nell'antichità sia dai Fenici che dai Greci, fu da questi ultimi chiamata Hyknusa che significa impronta, sicuramente perchè nella sua forma, ravvisavano l'orma di un piede umano. I Latini invece la chiamarono Sandalion, cioè sandalo.
